June 14: What you need to know for Saturday
Todd Zola: Saturday's first pitch is at 1:05 p.m. ET in Nationals Park where the Miami Marlins visit the Washington Nationals. Afternoon contests comprise most of the slate with only a couple of evening affairs.
Minnesota Twins SS Royce Lewis strained his left hamstring last night while hustling to first base after lining a single to left field. His status is pending testing. Lewis hit just his second home run of the season in the sixth inning. His 2-for-4 evening gives him a .393/.485/.571 line over his last 11 games. For the season, Lewis is at .202/.282/.303.
Kansas City Royals 2B Jonathan India injured his shoulder diving for a ball Friday night. He was 0-for-3, snapping a modest four-game hitting streak before leaving in the seventh inning. He is day-to-day, pending further evaluation.
Texas Rangers OF Evan Carter exited last night's contest with a wrist injury suffered after making a diving catch. However, after the game manager Bruce Bochy indicated that the injury does not appear serious, though he planned on giving Carter Saturday off, with the hope of being able to return Sunday. Carter was 0-for-2, snapping a four-game streak of collecting multiple hits.
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced that RP Justin Martinez requires Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career. He first had Tommy John surgery in 2021. The club hopes that the 23-year-old righty will return at some point next season. The Diamondbacks also reported that RP A.J. Puk has been shut down from long toss and is scheduled to be examined this weekend. Puk has been recovering from left elbow inflammation. Shelby Miller should handle the bulk of the save chances.
Aaron Civale requested a trade following his demotion to the bullpen and the Milwaukee Brewers obliged, shipping him to the Chicago White Sox for 1B Andrew Vaughn. Civale is slated to start tomorrow while Vaughn will likely report to Triple-A Nashville since he's blocked by Rhys Hoskins at first base and Christian Yelich at designated hitter.
June 13: What you need to know for Friday
Todd Zola: Friday's action begins with a 2:20 p.m. ET matinee in Wrigley Field with the Chicago Cubs hosting Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The remaining 14 games are all night games, with a pair of 6:45 p.m. ET starts on the docket.
In the opener of the Cubs-Pirates series Thursday night, Ryan Pressly collected the save with Daniel Palencia earning the eighth-inning hold in the Cubs' 3-2 win. Palencia took over closing duties in May, saving five games between May 21 and May 31. He struggled in his last appearance, garnering the loss last Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Meanwhile, since surrendering eight runs on May 6, Pressly has tossed 12 scoreless frames. After Thursday's clean inning, he's now up to 13. The next save chance will clarify this situation, but it appears that Pressly may have regained his closer gig.
Jacob Misiorowski's debut with the Milwaukee Brewers ended on a scary note, but after the game he indicated that he was fine. The rookie compiled five hitless and scoreless innings but appeared to hurt his ankle in the sixth. He left the game, but reported it was due to cramping. Misiorowski fanned five while also issuing four walks. He made 81 pitches, 49 for strikes, registering at least 100 mph 14 times.
Also last night, the Brewers welcomed Christian Yelich back to the lineup. He had missed the prior two contests due to a swollen right wrist. He was 2-for-4 in his return.
Isaac Paredes had to leave last night's game in the eighth inning because of a strained left hamstring. He suffered the injury while hustling down the line trying to prevent a double play. Including last night, Paredes has slugged .585 over his last 11 games, so The Houston Astros will miss his bat if he's forced to miss significant action. Mauricio Dubon would be the likely replacement.
The Los Angeles Angels will call up top prospect Christian Moore in advance of tonight's road date with the Baltimore Orioles. The No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 draft began the season with Double-A Rochester, batting just .238/.356/.328. Even so, Moore advanced to Triple-A Salt Lake where he improved to .350/.424/.575 over 20 games. He's slated to take over at second base, sliding Luis Rengifo to the hot corner. Moore projects to provide more power than most second baseman, but he does struggle to make contact. He does, however, draw walks at a high clip.
The New York Mets placed Kodai Senga on the 15-day IL thanks to a strained right hamstring. He suffered the injury covering the bag on a ground ball to 1B Pete Alonso. Senga had to reach for the high throw, but he reported feeling something in the step before he needed to extend to catch the ball. An MRI will clarify the severity and help set a timetable, but it is already clear that Senga should miss at least two weeks.
June 12: What you need to know for Thursday
Todd Zola: Thursday features more early action with a pair of 1:10 p.m. ET starts. There's one more afternoon affair followed by five evening contests on the abbreviated eight-game slate.
The Milwaukee Brewers are promoting top pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski to make his MLB debut tonight at home against the St. Louis Cardinals. The club reported that Aaron Civale is moving to the bullpen, so this should be more than a spot start for the 23-year-old right-hander. Misiorowski posted a 2.13 ERA and a 1.09 ERA for Triple-A Nashville, fanning 80 over 63⅓ innings, albeit with 31 free passes. He frequently eclipses the century mark with his fastball, along with featuring a plus slider. For more on the young pitcher, check out Eric Karabell's fantasy spin on what to expect from Misiorowski here.
Francisco Alvarez was expected to miss one more game on paternity leave before returning to the New York Mets on Friday. However, the team has activated him in time to play on Thursday as the Mets attempt to sweep the Washington Nationals at Citi Field. Luis Torrens started at catcher last night but will presumably back Alvarez up today. The recently recalled Hayden Senger was returned to Triple-A Syracuse.
One day after The San Francisco Giants placed 3B Matt Chapman on the IL due to sprained ligaments in his right hand, C Patrick Bailey joined him there as a result of a neck strain. The club hopes to have Chapman back by the All-Star break while there is no timeline for Bailey's return. Casey Schmitt will fill in at the hot corner with Andrew Knizner serving as the team's primary backstop.
On Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers announced that rookie SP Jackson Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery, costing him the rest of the season and most of next year. He was placed on the IL in late May after being diagnosed with a right flexor strain. However, a recent examination revealed the bad news. Sawyer Gipson-Long has been filling in for Jobe. The club hopes both Reese Olson and Alex Cobb will be back by the end of the month.
After going yard in his return to the lineup on Tuesday night, Jordan Westburg hit another homer Wednesday, providing a much-needed boost to the Baltimore Orioles lineup. For those two games, Westburg went 3-for-7 with four RBIs.
On Tuesday night, Jazz Chisholm Jr. had to leave early due to a tight neck. Last night, he exited early again -- this time in the bottom of the fifth inning because of a tight groin. His status for tonight when the New York Yankees attempt to sweep the Kansas City Royals on the road is unclear.
